Five Animal Qigong with Marshall and Gail Garland

CA$125.00

Five Animal QiGong, (Wu Qin Xi in Chinese), is one of the earliest forms of Medical Qigong, created by renowned Chinese physician and surgeon Hua Tao during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 CE).

Originally developed as 25 therapeutic exercises imitating the movements of five animals, its primary aim as a series of physical exercises was to strengthen the body, enhance Qi flow, and promote longevity.

The moves imitate  the movements and characteristics of five animals—tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird—integrating stretching and breathing techniques. Each animal corresponds to specific organs and elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, promoting physical health, mental focus, and spiritual well-being.

In the 1990s, the Chinese Medical QiGong Association standardized the original 25-move set into a 10-movement system accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. While still retaining its traditional focus on Qi cultivation, it integrates scientific insights on biomechanics and health benefits.

Studies since the latter half of the last century have shown Five Animal QiGong to be effective for knee osteoarthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and chronic conditions such as hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. It reduces stress and pain, improves lung and joint function, and enhances immune function, respiratory health, and overall vitality.

The workshop and classes are accessible to everyone and there are no prerequisites. You can register to attend in person or on Zoom. Recordings will be available for all participants for practice.

What is QiGong?

QiGong originated in China over 4,000 years ago. It is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, which describe that Qi, or life-force energy, is present in every living thing.

According to the principles, a person’s Qi must flow smoothly throughout the body in order for people to be healthy and feel their best. If Qi becomes stagnant or blocked in a certain area, health problems can occur.

QiGong uses slow, gentle, simple movements, along with synchronized breathing patterns to promote healthy energy flow and reduce stagnation of Qi.  Proper flow of Qi can help the body engage its own healing processes.
